Choosing Wedding Music

February 29th, 2008 by Dougyt

While you decide on the kind of music that you are going to have for your wedding you have to keep in mind a few things besides your personal taste, like, the atmosphere of the place, the duration of the wedding and the people who are going to attend the wedding. You can go for traditional music, but if you are open to it, it is advisable that you choose music that has a bit of everything so that all your guests can enjoy.

Although the influence of music is subtle, when properly arranged it can set the tone for the day. It can help the guests feel comfortable and enjoy the day, and provide the right atmosphere for the couple to exchange their vows.

To begin with, it should be made clear that there are no definite rules about the music that you are going to pick. In a way this makes the choice of music difficult and that much more important. The best way to go about it is to divide the day into different segments. If possible sought the help of a musically inclined friend of yours and get inputs from him. Also decide on the budget for the band. Getting a single band helps you to cut your costs immensely. If it is feasible you can even hire student musicians from neighborhood music schools. Another great alternative would be to hire a wedding DJ at the reception as it would mean a lot of savings and also the option of getting any music you want.

You need to have your music playing right from the time the guests start to filter in. as they look for their seats and strike up conversations the music should create a mood of quiet harmony. Gentle jazz should work well.

The next segment would be the processional. The mood should now be solemn, but not necessarily somber. Traditional music fits well in here.

Slowly we head towards the climax where the ceremony takes place. The piece that now should be played should be something very meaningful to the couple, something which both of you can relate to in a special way and thus makes your union that much more unique. You can even decide on not having any music for that moment if you feel like.

The Recessional marks a joyous moment with the completion of the marriage and should be accompanied by lively music. This is the segment where a couple can choose their favourite tunes.

The cocktail hour and the meal should have soft, infectious music which helps the crowd to chat and have their food. Only instruments can be used for this period.

At the very end comes the party and as people are going to dance now this is where the music has to really work. The music played should cater to people from all age groups and generally swing tunes are popular with all generations.

One last word. Before you go and hire a band make sure that you listen to to them playing and once you have hired them instruct them on all the details well in advance so that things don’t go wrong on the day.
